The Southwestern Travis County Groundwater Conservation District (District) is excited to partner with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service to offer local well owners an affordable opportunity to test their water quality. During the Well Water Checkup event, well owners within the District can have their well water screened for basic quality and common contaminants for just $15 per sample.
The “Well Informed” Texas Well Owner Network (TWON) program is an educational program that gives well owners the opportunity to have their well water samples screened for common contaminants including fecal coliform, E. coli bacteria, nitrates and high salinity. The screening of the water samples is followed by a 1-hour explanation of the results, water well protection practices and focuses on wellhead protection and recommendations for remediating well contamination.
To be eligible, you must be a registered well owner in the District. Well registration is free and helps the District protect groundwater resources. Not sure if your well is in the District? Search your address on the SWTCGCD Interactive Map.
Regular well maintenance and annual water testing are essential to ensure the proper operation of your well, prolong its years of service, and monitor the water quality. This event offers well owners with professional water-quality analysis at a reduced cost, helping identify potential contaminants such as total coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrate-nitrogen, and salinity.
Please use a clean sterile bottle when collecting your well water sample. The District has limited availability of test kits for those interested. Please email admin@swtcgcd.org or call the District office at (512) 276-2875 to confirm test kit availability and pickup.
To ensure accurate results, samples should be collected as close to drop-off time as possible but no earlier than 3 PM on March 3rd. Samples collected too early may not accurately detect bacteria. Please be sure to keep them refrigerated.
Return filled sample kits to the District office on March 4 between 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM. Payment of $15 is required at drop-off and must be made by cash and check only, payable to “Extension Account 250100-60007.”
First 10 people to drop off on March 4th, get a sample for free!
Results will be shared at an in-person community discussion hosted by the Texas Well Owner Network, Southwestern Travis County Groundwater Conservation District, Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer Conservation District, and Hays Trinity Groundwater Conservation District. In addition to sample results, the session will cover ways you can protect your well. This event will be held on March 5th from 1 PM to 2:30 PM at the Wimberley Village Library located at 400 FM 2325 in Wimberley, Texas. Attendance is optional but highly encouraged. If you cannot attend, results will be emailed within a couple of weeks.
